Minor Corrections

The published version of “Mental Partitioning and Explanations of Mental Conflict: An Investigation of Han Sources with Reference to Greek Psychology” contains some minor mistakes and typographical errors that escaped my notice at the time of publication. Below is a list of minor corrections and clarifications.

  • Footnote 1: Plato 351d6 should be “text starting at 352d6”. Aristotle 2011 is 1145b without line numbers. Correction to 1145b12-14.
  • Footnote 11: missing information. This should read “translation from LS 65G with slight modifications following (Gill 2006: 222).” The mention of Gill is missing in published version.
  • References to Plutarch’s work: change from “De Moralia” to “Moralia”
  • Galen’s PHP passage 3.2.24-27 should read 3.3.4-7 (page 185 for the English).
  • 凡物流行 to 凡物流形
  • Footnote 16: (Schwartz 1985: 270-271) should be 270-272 . (Nivison 1996: 141) should be 140-141
  • Footnote 19: (Slingerland 2014: 38-41) should be 28-31.
  • The Extended Reflections was not presented to the emperor Han Lingdi 漢靈帝 but to his successor Han Xiandi 漢獻帝
  • Reference to (Fan 1965) at beginning of part four. Incorrect volume number: 52.2058-2062 to 62.2058-2062
  • In Discussion on (Zhao 2019: 54) in section four, I note that Zhao states that what is being made is an ethical distinction. “Ethical” should be changed to “value”. The reference should be placed after “distinction”. The following is my own commentary.
  • In the article I briefly mention the titles of two chapters from the Chunqiu Fanlu. I neglected to mention the English translations of the chapter titles follow Queen, Sarah A. and Major, John. ed. and trans. 2016. Luxuriant Gems of the Spring and Autumn. New York: Columbia University Press. This source is also missing from the references.
  • I neglected to mention that minor alterations were made to the punctuation of some Chinese passages of the Extended Reflections. Changes were made after comparison and consideration with punctuation in other versions.
  • Chinese quotation from Zhao Qi on xing and qing found in (Jiao, 2017): 孝經云 to 孝經曰. As noted in footnote 41, Zhao Qi’s passage is also found in Sun Shi’s commentary (with 云 instead of 曰). Error from using text to (Sun 2009) cited in footnote 41. Chinese passage uses standard punctuation for Sun’s commentary, which is slightly different than (Jiao 2017).
  • The last passage from the Extended Reflections: the two 只 should be 隻.
  • Footnote 47: Aristotle 1102b10-30 to 12-30. 1119b to 1119b13-18
  • Reference Cao 2019: is missing the subheading 兼論與古希臘心靈意識之比較
  • Reference Chen 1994: 正 to 證
  • Reference for Galen, 2005: This reference should be more complete. It also contains a minor typographical error. Galen. 2005. Galeni De Placitis Hippocratis et Platonis. Edition, Translation, and Commentary by Phillip De Lacy. 3rd edition. 3 volumes. CMG V 4,1,2. Berlin: Akademie Verlag. (“Akademic” in published version).
  • Reference Graham 1990: The title should be corrected to “The Background of the Mencian Theory of Human Nature”
  • Reference Kamtekar 2012: missing subheading “Personification in Plato’s Psychology”
  • Reference Puett 2004: missing words. Correct to “The Ethics of Responding Properly: The Notion of Qing 情 in Early Chinese Thought”
  • Reference Price 2009: “subject” to “subjects”
  • Reference Queen 1996: “Sarah Q.” to “Sarah A.”
  • Reference Slingerland 2011: missing subheading “Cognitive Science, Virtue Ethics, and Early Confucian Ethics”
